Tryout Guidelines
- Make sure to bring your own water bottle!!
- Make sure to register AT LEAST 40 minutes prior a tryout
- Make sure to warm-up and stretch prior to the tryout
- Make sure to ask questions to inform yourself about the team/club before the tryout.
- Make sure to stay behind after the tryout to find out if your child made the team or what other instructions have been made.
- NO OFFERING LETTER LEAVES THE RINK. Either you accept and sign upon request or you forego your spot on the team with the risk of another player taking your spot. NO EXCEPTIONS!!
Here are some guidelines to PLAYERS who want to make a good impression on a Coach
- Be a team player, encourage others to do well and show ability to be a leader.
- Work hard all the time. Coaches love players who work hard and sacrifice themselves for the team (block shots, give and take checks)
- Show Coaches that you WANT THE PUCK either verbally or non-verbally.
- Show that you can be effective WITHOUT THE PUCK
- Play like it is the Stanley Cup finals. Coaches want winners which is an attitude and not a temporary feeling due to importance of games etc.
- Be courteous to other players, coaches and representatives at the rink. Show great character!!
- If you don't understand something, ASK THE COACH. Coaches actually like when players ask questions which exhibit interest in what the Coach is trying to teach and it shows a drive to lead instead of going to the back of the line to follow the others.
Here are some good questions to ask any coach PRIOR to trying out.
- What are your intentions regarding tournaments (how many tournaments will we go to, how many out of state)?
Note - Tournaments are not part of the fee's charged by the California Heat. Those fee's cover practice costs, apparel and coaches fee's. Other costs charged by the team manager to compensate for tournaments will apply to each respective team. Some are based on their progress (playoffs or not) and intended tournaments (in state vs. out of state). Costs between teams will vary based on these occurrences.
- Are we going to add practices to the regular team schedule on a regular basis? (additional practices are paid on a team pro-rata basis)
- Are we going to include additional events to the program such as additional dryland sessions and/or Floorball sessions not covered by the Club etc? (such cost to be paid by the team on a pro-rata basis)
- Do you teach special teams, systems etc?
- Do you intend on participating in national tournaments such as Silverstick?
- If you did not do research on the coach, ask about the Coach's background!!
Here are some questions to ask any coach IF YOUR CHILD is selected to a team?
- What role do you expect my child to play on this team?
- What do you expect of my child this year?
- What do you see as strengths and weaknesses in my child?
Here are some things NOT to do at a tryout
- Don't express frustration over a coaches decision that may adversely affect your child. It is not a matter of being better or worse, it is a matter of what the Coach believes to fit in his program. A good coach forms a good team and does not always simply pick the fastest, hardest shooting, biggest or even the best players. Also, for a coach to turn down a player is not the easiest thing to do. Don't accuse their judgment but rather ask what your child needs to do to make the team at a later point if possible.
- Don't show up late and neglect to inform yourself about a team which may cause you to not agree with clearly expressed intentions after you may have signed on to a team.
- Don't behave disrespectful to club or team personnel. Many volunteers take their time to help out the Club so please show them some respect and make their day as good as possible.
- Don't leave the rink without making sure the Coach has made the selection regarding your child.
- If asked to sign, take your time to make up your mind. If you decide to wait with your decision to join a team, don't be surprised if the Coach signs another player and your child can't join the team in the future because it is now full. Coaches need to move swiftly to ensure the overall team is comprised of the best suited players possible.
Now you have a good idea of what the Wolves program is all about and how the Coach perceives your child as an asset to the team. Welcome to the West Valley Wolves!!
